Life & Liberty

Declaration of IndependenceWhen I was a kid, I learned in school about the principles that make our nation "a shining city on a hill."  It's those principles listed in the opening of the Declaration of Independence - those about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

First and foremost in that list is life.  Without life, we have nothing.  I am pro-life.  I believe that life begins at conception and ends at natural death.  I believe that every human being should be welcomed in life and protected in law.  And under no circumstance should any human being in our society be fearful that their own government's policies will promote a hastened end to their life either by rationing of life-giving care or the promotion of assisted suicide.

Next is liberty.  There is a positive and necessary role for government in our society.  But at the same time, I believe that our freedom is best preserved when government intrudes the least into our everyday lives and respects the limits placed on it by the Constitution.  I support the 2nd Amendment and defend the institution of marriage, which has stood as the cornerstone of our society since our nation's founding, as between one man and one woman.

And last but not least is the pursuit of happiness.  America is unique.  We are one of the only countries in the world where anyone can grow up and become anything he or she wants to be if they just work hard and apply their God-given talents.  That entrepreneurial spirit has helped make us the greatest nation in the world.  I will work to keep it that way.

I believe America's best days are ahead and that we can leave our children and grandchildren a better world than we inherited.
